Every now and then we will put together an extremely high end turntable for someone who is wanting a complete system overhaul. Now, we all know that a turntable needs a phonostage in order to function (well, if you don’t, read all about it over here…), but did you know that it takes a high end phonostage to drive the signal of a high end turntable? In other words, there is pretty much no point in forking out extra cash for a beautifully made and designed turntable (and its cartridge, lets not forget!) if the phonostage isn’t up to scratch.
Which brings us onto the delightful Trichord Dino MK3 – and assorted upgrades. We bring this one up because it is always the first phonostage we recommend to compliment a high end turntable. Not just because it’s excellent value (at a starting price of £490, it’s one of the most affordable high-end phonostages out there), but also because it’s exceptional – in every way – without being too scary in the price department.
But what makes the Trichord Dino as exceptional as it is? And what about its 3rd incarnation – is it worth this pedigree?
Well, lets just start by pointing out… Trichord don’t release many models, very often. They won’t release a new anything unless they see a very good reason to do so. And considering the MK2 was blindingly popular with critics and punters alike, it was a bit of a surprise when it was retired to make way for a newer model.
So, why did the MK3 need to come into being? Simple: noise! For those signature ‘inky black’ silences, those edgy dynamics and crystal clear sound stage, there’s ALWAYS room for improvement. Trichord found a way to improve it – and they did so by quite a margin! By reducing the ‘noise’ by 4.5dB, which makes this the quietest dinosaur of them all – and definitely the quietest at this power point.
The only downside is – in order to keep this whisper-quiet level (quieter units = less interference = cleaner signal = better sound!), the Dinos by their nature will only work with a seperate power supply, of which there are two choices.
But, the way we look at it, that’s a very small price to pay for what is essentially still one of the quietest phonostages around.
We’re starting to think it may have been a little inappropriately named!
If you’d like to hear more (well, less!) from the MK3, get in touch! We always have one ready to demo.
