Gaming. We take it just as seriously as hi-fi, here at Audio Affair. And for a fully immersive gaming experience, the sound needs to be just as immersive and realistic as the visuals, the mechanics and the gameplay. In fact, we’d argue that its the sound that truly makes a video game come to life. Of course, it helps if you have the right equipment to see you through, in the game and out of it. Luckily, Audio Technica have you covered with two incredible headsets to chose from.

We have already covered the Audio Technica ATH-AG1X (one letter difference in the name, but quite a few differences in the model) in this blog earlier this year, so now it’s the turn of…

The Audio Technica ATH-ADG1X Gaming Headphones, described by the manufacturers themselves as the ultimate high-fidelity gaming experience, are owed to the collaborative efforts between Audio Technica’s 40 years of experience in the headphone field, and an award winning gaming composer: Frank Klepacki of Westwood Studios fame:

Klepacki has been a key player in the gaming industry since the early 1990s. His groundbreaking, cinematic scores and sound designs have pushed technological and musical boundaries, raising the art of video game soundtrack production to an unprecedented level. Frank depends on Audio-Technica products when creating in the studio. So it’s little wonder that he also recommends A-T’s high-fidelity gaming headsets to those wanting to hear all the power and nuance of his work. Experience the games as Frank intended, and take yourself to a different level of gaming.” ~ Audio Technica

The fact they are endorsed by a gaming composer (and one of the most respected ones at that) gives this model a clear advantage over the competing models in other ranges (such as the Sennhesiers of a similar price point). But what makes them as special as they are? Well, much like the Audio Technica ATH-AG1X , they feature advanced and newly designed 53mm drivers, a lightweight and open-air honeycomb aluminium shell, combined with soft earpads, a 3D wing system for hours of comfort and an advanced microphone for state-of-the-art in game comms – complete with a “windscreen” for unwanted noise.

The differences between the two models are slight, but it’s the kind of thing you’ll notice when you’re in the zone. The Audio Technica ATH-ADG1X are considerably lighter at 285g (as opposed to 320g) and are open backed, as opposed to close-backed. This is an unusual choice for gaming headphones, but in this instance it works. Whats-more, it means these headphones are just as suitable (and impressive) when used with both music, and with games – something the open backed “type” lends itself to more naturally.

The sound is clear, immersive and very much the kind of thing you’d expect the composer to approve of. We like Klepacki’s taste. If you’d like to try these out for yourself, click here to take a look at the full listing, including the tech specs.
