Metal and leather is a fierce combination in any given setting, and these beautiful new headphones by focal are no exception to that. In fact, they may well bolster that opinion all on their own. They haven’t been out for very long, and our initial delivery sold out very quickly. By the time you read this we should have some back in again, but judging by their popularity those might not last very long either.
These are the Focal Elear Headphones. Designed and manufactured entirely in France, these are audiophile-grade open backed marvels that still sit comfortably in the “under £1000” bracket at a modest £800. Here’s what the manufacturers themselves have to say about them:
“Inspired by the best technology and acoustic research that went into designing Utopia, our flagship headphones, they offer truly exceptional performance. Be inspired by the sound of a high-fidelity system with a pair of Elear headphones, for hours of listening pleasure.” ~ Focal
You read that correctly, the £800 Elear uses much of the same technology as the Utopia (also in stock) which is already considered to be a new world-reference model with a £3250 price tag. The Elear sits within a new range of high-end Focal headphones, with the Utopia sat at the top, and a pair of portables and earphones at the other end. All game-changing in their own right, and all with a long list of design features and benefits.
The Focal Elear Headphones design covers all bases. The pure yet mechanical design is smooth and seamless, with a striking solid aluminium yoke. They also feature a lambskin headband and memory foam ear cushions for maximum comfort, essential for the long listening sessions they’re designed for. But what’s really striking about these, in terms of design, are the speaker drivers housed in aluminium.
Optimal comfort is one thing, but it’s the sound that sets these apart. Truly audiophile-grade, the 40mm speaker drivers are housed in an aluminium/magnesium “m shaped dome” providing a stunningly open and realistic sound.
They haven’t been around very long (and neither have the flagship Utopias) but their level of clarity is already being called “unrivalled”. A new benchmark for the under £1000 bracket is firmly on the horizon, and it sounds glorious.
