If you’re new to the hi-fi game, or if you’re looking for a complete system overhaul – sometimes it’s hard to know exactly what to get. There are so many options, which way do you turn?
Well luckily we’ve identified this as an issue, put our heads together and come up with a series of packages. All of which will work well together, look great together and – most importantly – sound great together. Pro-Ject 1 Xpression Carbon Turntable- £575
This stunning piece of machinery would make even the hardiest audiophile go weak at the knees. It combines many of the successes of the Xpression range with new features that can only be found on this particular model.It has a one-piece carbon fibre tonearm inspired by the superior Evolution tonearms. This over-sized support is designed to isolates the tonearm from the plinth and takes any minor resonances in the tonearm and dissipates them immediately. And you know that this can only be a good thing: a nice clean signal for your phono stage (see below). The icing on the cake that is the Xpression Carbon is the brand new Ortofon 2M Silver, a special version of Ortofon’s world famous 2M Red cartridge, finished with silver spools for optimal signal generation.

Pro-Ject Phono Box DS Phono Stage – £229
No, it’s not the prettiest phonostage we’ve ever stumbled upon – but does a phono stage really need to be pretty? Nope. It needs to a) sound good and b) be a good match for the turntable in question. And this Pro-ject DS ticks both of those boxes beautifully. And it really doesn’t look all that bad, especially not when nestled amongst some slick hi-fi gear. This Box is designed to be an affordable companion for higher end turntables, and will switch between both MM and MC inputs with ease. Pair this with almost any turntable as the middle man – and you will be satisfied.

Pro-Ject Stereo Box S Integrated Amplifier – £199

This is a small but might integrated amp. A fully-grown ‘proper’ inte amp in a tiny, compact package. It will fit in beautifully with the two other Pro-jects (as seen above) and it will make just the right kind of racket. And when we say it’s small, we mean it’s small. This little amp is barely the size of a well-stuffed wallet. Yet, it will show you a good time with anything up to medium sized bookshelves.
Speaking of which…
Dali Zensor 1 Speakers – £199
Sticking with the theme (have you spotted it yet?) are the sensational Dali Zensors. These are small bookshelves – easily carried under the arm (a larger person could likely fit two under one arm!) and delicate in appearance, these beautiful speakers boast a highly refined sound image – owed in part to their slick and technical cabinet design, and the stiff yet light wood fibre cones. Mounted on some similarly capable stands, these are speakers that won’t let you down in the bass, mid or high range departments, not even when conveying the dulcet tones of a turntable.
