What do we know about HiFi Man? They’re well-made, they sound awesome and they’re typically a preferential brand for audiophiles.  They are also stricty home-use only, and often a little higher-end in the price arena. Well, things are about to change… well, at least for the sake of one model! Introducing…

The HiFi Man Edition S Headphones! Now, without peeking, how much would you say a pair of those cost? Would you believe me if I were to say… £189? Well, it’s true. They are now HiFi Man’s most affordable model. It was HE400S before at £219, but these are £30 cheaper.

But what’s even more interesting about this pair of cans is its HiFi Man’s first pair to be designed principally as a portable, go-anywhere model. Sure, you can take the HE400S, HE400i and HE560 (all HiFi Man, for the record) out and about with you, but theyre open backed so not as suitable for the outside-listening world. The Edition S’ are closed back, to cancel the noise are create a more submersible listening experience. It’s also worth noting that they do this:

HiFiMan-S-Folded-1200x816

The signature folded-stance of the truly portable headphone. Whatever you do, don’t try to do this to any of the HE models mentioned above. It won’t end qell!

With such a low price, naturally you probably have a few concerns about the sound. Well, I can tell you that they sound: really impressive! Like a baby-version off either the HE400S or the HE400i. In moving from an open to a closed design, HiFi Man haven’t lost any of their signature sound (not bad for a first run, even better for a budget!) and what’s better yet is these are far from sounding “shut-in” and dampened like some closed headphones can. The Edition S provide a personal, private experience. This is what they’ve been designed for, and frankly it’s quite a lot you’re getting for £189.

Okay okay, so there are lots of this sort of thing on the market. That’s the downside. Headphones are really i and fashionable right now, the higher-end the better. And portable stuff is even more fashionable still! So yeah, it’s pretty saturated and there are lots (lots!) of choices. You have free-reign. And yet, for our money (and the true audiophile choice) its either these or Sennheiser Momentum for us. However, the similarly sized (over ear) Momentum variant of these will set you back £269, which is a big mark up. This makes the Edition S an excellent choice for both sound and for price.
