It’s always exciting when a new product is announced. And a new pair of headphones (especially a new incarnation of something that has already achieved legendary status) always causes a bit of a stir in the showroom. So you can only imagine how excited we get when a whole new range based on one particularly remarkable set comes along?

Well, there was a party at Audio Affair when we received the very first shipment of Sennheiser Momentum 2.0s. Especially when we discovered there were eight of them, in a mix of “on ear”, “over ear”, “in ear” and evcn “wireless”.

No matter which model you go for, you have the choice of a black, brown and ivory finishes, and they are all fantastic in their own unique way. But which ones should you consider? Well, that depends on your needs and wants, of course. But this range can be noted as exceptional as it includes every major type of headphone, all the while staying true to what made the original mid-range marvels as special as they were.

What also makes this range unique is each model (except the “wireless”, but we’ll get onto that in a moment) is specifically engineered to work with either Android of iOS devices, which make this a range that is – quite literally – designed to work on-the-go.

To celebrate this gorgeous new range, we’ve constructed a little break down of the types and the models therein. Starting with…

On Ear

On Ear headphones get their (rather unimaginative) name from the fact that they sit on the ear (rather than over the ear). There are more imaginative ways of referring to them though: semi-open headphones, supra-aural headphones or earpad headphones are also commonly used terms. On Ears are usually very comfortable and good for avoiding the ‘hot ear’ issue, more common with their rivals… the Over Ears. The vast majority will fold up too, which makes them suitable for hi-fi on-the-go.

Momentum 2.0 On Ear G Android / i iOS

Low profile and super stylish, the Momentum On Ears combine the ability to carry high-resolution sound with a lightweight, puristic design and high-grade (and rather lush!) materials like stainless steel and Alcantara (for the super-breathable earpads). Owed in part to the proprietary 18-Ω Neodym transducers the trademark Momentum sound is ever present: clear, richly detailed, and with a powerful bass. There’s also an integrated in-line remote lets you easily control phone calls, music, and volume.

Pick G if you’re Android and i if you’re iOS. Easy!

Next up, the On Ear’s greatest rivals…

Over Ear

Okay, there are no points for guessing where the name came from. Over Ear headphones sit over the ear (there you go) and in doing so block out much more external noise than the On Ears, or even the In Ears. Over Ears are usually reserved for the higher-end models as they are less suitable for life on the move, and are typically used in the home.

What we like about the Over Ears in this particular range is it doesn’t limit itself to the desk. It’s fiited with a 3.5mm jac, which means it is fully optimised for life on the road (and for the devices that go with such a life!) with high-grade components and materials and real attention to detail these are headphones you will be proud to take outside. And when you hear how good they sound, you’ll be glad you did! Perfect for the kind of person who likes to listen at home, and on-the-go.

Take that conventions!

In Ear

Once In Ears (also known as earphones) were regarded as a portable convenience and little else. But technology has improved these handy little phones to the point where they can hold their own in the sound department against their larger (and more expensive) counterparts! These are headphones that sit inside the ear, and are usually the first port of call for mobile devices and portable listening.

Momentum M2 IEi Android / iOS

What sets the M2s aside from the rest of the 2.0 range, is they’re available in one finish, and one finish only: black and red. But it looks so good, we honestly don’t think it needed to be available in anything else. These earphones manage to be sleek and sophisticated, all the while being immensely robust and powerful. Definitely a contender for our favourite buds yet!

Wireless

Wires have, and always will be, a bit annoying. I mean, nobody likes them. Not really. Which is why recent improvements in wireless technologies have made wireless headphones a pretty exciting feat. Wireless headphones require a transmitter, and charging. But they’re worth it for the pure convenience.

The Momentum Wireless options are suitable for both Android and iOS, but there are still two options to chose from…

Momentum 2.0 Wireless On Ear / Over Ear

Available in black and ivory (the black ones are particularly popular!), the two options are both premium grade wireless headphones. Offering exceptional and convenient portability, these closed supra-aural headphones also benefit from Bluetooth wireless technology and NoiseGard Hybrid active noise cancellation, which makes for a wireless experience that has blown us away. Both are made out of premium materials like stainless steel and Alcantra, they’re very comfortable and robust, and suitable for use both inside (especially the Over Ear) and outside (… the On Ear!), and never skimping on the sound, despite the lack of dangling cables.

What’s not to love?

While we’re on the topic of new Sennheisers, it’s worth a quick mention of the 630VB. These are Around Ear headphones that may not be Momentum, but are still pretty exciting. And yes, like everything else mentioned above, they are available for demo too.

See something you like? Curious to give something – or all of it – a try to find your perfect match (it’s impossible to know if you’re On over Over Ear without trying these things out first, in our opinion!) then give us a shout! We will love showing them off as much as you will love demoing them. Promise!
