So, it’s no secret that we love our home cinema stuff. Heck, we wouldn’t write about it (or indeed sell it!) if we didn’t! But did you know we sold projectors too? Well, actually, we sell the whole AV set up. The 5.1s (and the 7.2s!), the AV receviers, the projectors and even the screens. If you didn’t know that, now you do. So let’s shine a light on one of the most important things in the home cinema set up… the projector!
That is the humble (on the outside!) JVC DLA-X5000 Home Cinema Projector. It sits at the start of a range that has a 7000 and 9000 coming after it, but at £3,999 you can only imagine what the other two cost! They are much higher end, where this is an excellent, high quality and great value projector that is perfect for home use. It comes in both black and white, but black seems to be the most popular!
The X5000 replaces the X500 model, which was a multi-award winner, revered as highly as it was for having very good and very deep black levels. And as any good cinema (home or otherwise!) know, deep blacks make for excellent ambience. Well, The X5000 has changed a few things (for the better!) but it has held tightly onto the good deep blacks that made its predecessor such a success.
But the good black levels (they really are very good!) aren’t the only thing that makes this projector special: the brightness has been hiked up by 20%! There are two things that a projector can be truly measured on: brightness and contrast. Well, this projector has nailed both of those things. It’s brighter and it’s better, improving massively on what was already a winning formula.
It’s worth noting that while this projector supports 4K- it’s not actually native 4K (it’s 2160 line), but frankly there isn’t much 4K out there anyway! What this projector does have is the best possible normal HD picture. If you’re not too fussed about 4K (and there isn’t much to be fussed about yet!) this is all you need.
There are three big players for home projectors (at this price): JVC, Epsom and Sony. Sony have native 4K, which means they will both support and play at 4K and Epsom have laser projectors. But what JVC have is D-ILA D-ILA (Direct Drive Image Light Amplifier), which basically means the pixel gap is far narrower (40% narrower in this instance) – which makes the image practically pixel free. Very film-like!
How does it look? Well, we used to sell Pioneer television screens which had a technology called Kuro which leant itself beautifully for very deep black levels. JVC is the only thing we have come across since that gives those deep black levels that Kuro did. Now, that was five years or so ago and the projectors are far more advanced than those screens, but it’s something that’s worth mentioning. It’s also worth mentioning that we only picked one brand for projectors – and we picked JVC. Why? Well, it’s all about those beautiful deep blacks, really!
