The technology in the hi-fi and AV world has gradually improved to a certain point. Once upon a time, seperation was the only way to achieve the closest thing possible to perfection. Now, that isn’t strictly true. In fact, one-box (or at least, fewer box) solutions are becoming ever more desirable, and that’s not just down to convenience. Now it’s possible to have something that will sound the part regardless of the source… and look the part too.
Case and point…
The Oppo BDP-105D Blu Ray Player is a Blu Ray player first and foremost (and a mighty fine one at that) but there are some other pretty major boxes that it ticks. So much so, it would be something of a travesty to refer to it as “just a Blu Ray Player”. It is a verifiable smorgasbord of features that are both useful and suitable for the more hardcore of the AV/hi-fi crowd.
First up: the visuals. It features 2D to 3D conversion, and Darbee’s Visual Presence which, in Oppo’s own words, means:
“… a fundamental breakthrough for image realism. By embedding stereoscopic depth information generated from a patented human-vision-based model into 2D or 3D video, it provides greater clarity and increases the perception of depth resulting in a more dynamic, lifelike experience. The amount of processing is adjustable, allowing you to customize the visual enhancement to your particular taste.” ~ Oppo
Combine this with the 4K Upscaling, what you see is perhaps the closest thing you can get to the real thing. Heck, perhaps even better.
And then we have the sound.
This Blu Ray player also features a dedicated 2-channel analog output with specially optimised ES9018 DAC and output driving stages. What this means in layman’s terms, is it can handle the sound just as well as a dedicated receiver with a built in DAC. The DAC is, as many of you will already know, one of the most important components in digital sound recreation, and this Blu Ray player has one of the best in the business: the ESS SABRE32 Reference ES9018, considered by many (if not all) to be the world’s best 32-bit DAC. The result is the kind of high fidelity sound you’d expect from a dedicated hi-fi system… but in the small and convenient Blu Ray case.
And yet, there’s more still. This demure looking player is also a Network player. And as it will handle your movies and music to an equally high standard, you can use it for all your media needs. Stream your music and your movies (although we wouldn’t recommend at the same time) all from one place, and with significant ease of control with Oppo’s MediaControl app, which turns your device(s) into a completely functional remote control, for both your music…. and your movies.
… the best part? It’s not as expensive as you may think. At just £1099, you could have a unit which ticks almost every box… and ticks it well. That’s what makes it such a hard player to beat… it does far far more than you could ever expect. Especially for such a relatively low price!
