Never underestimate the power and importance of a soundtrack, for the soundtrack can be what the film is ultimately remembered for. The Maze Runner was released earlier this year (2014) and was a surprising box office and critical success, being singled out as an excellent example of a teen novel-film adaptation (and let’s face it, there are a lot of them) owed largely to the outstanding performances from cast members, the film’s ominously dark tone and its accompanying soundtrack.
The soundtrack for The Maze Runner features a score by John Paesano, an American film composer and conductor. Paesano studied classical music with composition at the Conservatoire de Paris. In 2012 he was honored with an Annie Award for Best Score for the award winning television series Dreamworks Dragons: Riders Of Berk. It’s a purely classical soundtrack, written purposefully, scene-for-scene. This traditional approach sets it apart from its rivals The Hunger Games, Divergent and others like it, which sought contributions from popular artists. The Maze Runner sets itself apart even further with this soundtrack, carving out a niche all its own. It’s powerful, its intricate and it’s downright scary in places. Everything you want from your science-fiction-action-dystopian-thriller.
Why do you need this LP?
If you’ve become disillusioned with modern soundtracks being so largely saturated with contemporary pop artists and long for the days of a tailor made symphonic score – this is the LP for you. It’s fresh – barely a few weeks old – and as a standalone article it has attracted some very favourable reviews. Being likened to a classic horror soundtrack, it is incredibly atmospheric. Tense, dramatic, eerie and at times uplifting, it’s a fantastic – brand new – classical compostion that you’ll love, even if you didn’t care for the film. Or even if you haven’t seen it!
