If you keep up to date with the latest advances in hi-fi technology, it’s highly likely you’ve come across the term AptX. But what is AptX? Essentially, it’s the latest step in the field of Bluetooth streaming. Bluetooth, despite being a revolution in itself, has a nasty habit of compressing audio sent over it, discarding data deemed ‘unecessary’. But, as any audiophile will tell you, there is no such thing as ‘unecessary’ information when it comes to hi-fidelity. Due to this loss, there was a degarding of sound quality, no matter how hi-end the speaker. This meant that streaming audio could only go so far in offering something that could compete with real, fully-wired hi-fi. And that’s where AptX comes in. AptX is an audio codec algorithm which enables the HD streaming of audio. There is still some compression involved – but it’s a different kind. AptX uses a different type of modelling to Bluetooth, which uses fewer bits per sample. Smaller files mean less has to be discarded, so loss of sound and detail is no longer a problem.
To enjoy the benefits of AptX and its virtually lossless ‘CD quality’ sound, both of the devices communicating have to have it too. But when you consider just how many smartphones now feature it as a standard as well as many of the corresponding devices, it’s worth taking that extra step to pair it with a speaker that can do it justice. Who knows, your smartphone may well already have it. So you could already be halfway there!
If you do have an AptX enabled device – or are considering getting one – then here are five speakers which will make perfect streaming partners. Sit back, relax, enjoy.

3. Ruark Audio MR1 Bluetooth Active – £299
Ruark are probably most well known for their hi-end digital radios which continuously win award after award, based on pure sound and usability. They have passed this knowledge and experience onto a lovely pair of (also award winning) speakers – featuring their iconic contemporary-meets-retro styling with lovely wooden finishes. And yes, they sound just as good as they should. They have all of the essential features: AptX (as you may have guessed), auto standby, and a host of inputs for a plethora of devices, a loudness function (to assist with high sound quality at low volume levels), an LED display and even outputs for additional active subwoofer. 4. Q Acoustics BT3 Wireless Active Speakers – £349
>
If superb sound, superior build quality and high grade components are important to you, then it’s worth digging just a little bit deeper for a pair of Q Acoustics’ BT3s, from the very same company that gave us both the 2020i speakers and Concept 20 – which have won more awards than your could shake an antenna at. These are the first active speakers from Q, but they have hit the ground sprinting. They are just as compact as their competitors, but the sound quality has the edge – these are real hi-fi speakers in a bite size form. And yes, they bite back.
Why do we like them?

5. Naim Muso Wireless Speaker System – £895
The Muso Wireless is – in our opinion – the ultimate wireless speaker, and our flagship. This is the legendary Naim’s very first wireless speaker, designed completely from the ground up. It’s a brand new product, derived from nothing and answering to nothing. Except to the call of a Bluetooth AptX compatible device, of course, or indeed any wireless compatible device. It features DSP (Digital Sound Processing) Technology, which enhances the quality of an audio file that passes through it. Six digital amplifiers, six hi-end drivers and an aluminium cabinet finish the job. Now all that’s left is AirPlay, to make this the iPhone’s perfect partner. It looks right, it sounds right… it’s just right.
Why do we like it?
As wireless speakers go, you won’t find much better. It is simply stunning in every way. We are already inundated with back orders, so we recommend you get in quick if you want one of these for yourself. And trust us, you do.
We believe that AptX is an enabler for the future of wireless streaming. We’ve heard it in action, and it really is full CD quality. And if you have the device, why not give it a try?
