The latest Tannoy Revolution series, the Revolution XT is one that we have focused on more than a couple of times, both in its entirety and specifically on the multi-award winning XT 6F (in fact, that’s been the subject more than once), but what we have yet to touch upon with any real detail is the much larger version of the XT 6F, and the flagship of the XT range.
The Tannoy Revolution XT 8F are floorstanding speakers which act as the larger floorstanders in the Tannoy Revolution XT series.
Design wise, the Tannoy Revolution XT 8Fs benefit from the same treatment as the smaller XT 6Fs:
– Omnimagnet™ Dual Concentric™ 8″ drivers
– Down-firing external point
– Integral plinth
– Bass-centric “waveguide” cabinet design
The Omnimagnet drivers deliver pure point-source articulation, the down-firing external point delivers tuneful and musically coherent bass and the integral plinth offers superior isolation from vibrations. Another interesting point in the design is the placement of the tweeter. It sits in the middle of the mid/bass driver, improving on the uniformity of dispersion.
One of the many benefits of the XT 8F is the wave guide, made possible by the design of the 49.4 litre cabinet:
“The precisely engineered angle of the ‘waveguide’ formed between cabinet and plinth encourages LF energy to disperse forward into the room, making closer-to-wall placement of the speaker than is typically possible without major detrimental effect on sound quality.” ~ Tannoy
The result is that which makes the XT 8F (and the Revolution XT series as a whole) as striking as it is: tight, articulate and pleasing with plenty of lovely bass. They are loudspeakers which catch your eye and your ear in equal measure, with a beautiful, well-thought-out finish, available in either dark walnut or medium oak.
They are, at their core, simply larger versions of the XT 6F. They are suitable for much larger spaces, however, and are therefore worthy of consideration for those who like the sound and style of the XT 6Fs, but are worried about their ability to cope in bigger rooms. On the flipside, if your space is a smaller one, it’s worth turning your attention back to the XT 6Fs, as the Tannoy Revolution XT 8Fs will struggle to perform in smaller spaces.
One of the most striking elements of the XT 8F mirrors the rest of its family: its price. It’s remarkably good value, and will hold its own quite comfortably against its higher-priced competitors.
