I have written about the many and varied Yamaha MusicCast systems and speakers as they have emerged, with one particular speaker catching my eye: the Wx-030. This was a compact, feature-laden wireless multiroom speaker full of promise. The critics recognised this and so did the customers, inspiring Yamaha to look a little closer and see what else could be done in this field of mini-multiroom.

Which leads me onto the latest MusicCast incarnation:

The tiny Yamaha WX-010 Wireless Speaker + MusicCast. A compact wireless speaker with a closed two-way system and dual passive radiators, which means it delivers astonishing bass reproduction given its size. Just how small is it…? Well, it’s a mere 120.7 x 159 x 130.2mm, weighing 1.67Kg. It boasts a very small footprint, making it perfect for kitchens, desks or even bedside tables.

It’s gorgeously understated in appearance, yet boasts a sound that will make you look twice! It functions in much the same way as every other MusicCast wireless speaker, taking up just a fraction of the room.

You know the drill: stream music directly from your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth or AirPlay, and use the MusicCast Controller app to control proceedings from your device. The WX-010 is equipped with the latest Bluetooth wireless technology, making wireless operation even more convenient than ever. You can even stream from the WX-010 to Bluetooth headphones… and of course, other MusicCast speakers.

With its surprisingly room-filling and highly robust sound (a guaranteed talking piece), this is a speaker that will suffice both by itself, as a stereo-pairing (one serving as left and one as a right when bought as a pair) and as a part of the ever popular Multiroom Musiccast system. And thanks to it being of a modest price and of great versatility placement wise (you can even mount it on a wall with commercially available speaker mounts) there’s nothing stopping you from putting one in every room! It will integrate with every unit within the MusicCast genre… but it will also quite happily integrate with itself.

As with the rest of the MusicCast range, this is a direct competitor for the you know what. And with it’s high levels of usability, incredible sound quality and very accessible price point, we can see it reaching very lofty and competitive heights… despite its small stature. This could well be the only multiroom system you’ll ever need, or indeed want.
