Thorens, founded in 1965 in Switzerland produces high-quality turntables. Thorens TD 1600 and TD 1601 are two of the brand’s latest models following in the footsteps of the original TD 160. This latest release fills the gap between modern and classic elements. Both models share the same platform and height with the 1601 having some additional features as standard over the 1600. Both units come in either high gloss walnut or piano black finishes

TD 160

The now-discontinued TD 160 is held in high regard as the classic Thorens sub-chassis turntable. Introduced in 1972 it replaced the smaller TD 150. The TD 160 was heavier and more stable than the 150 making it extremely popular for a range of applications. Over the years many variations have been released to supplement the TD 160. The TD 160 Super featured a reinforced chassis for higher stability. All these variants used a synchronous motor (initially 220V and later 16V low voltage) without electronic control. The last series, the TD 160 S Mk V had an auto shut off and was equipped with the outstanding Thorens TP 90 tonearm.

TD 1600

TD-1600 is a highly efficient turntable with excellent performance. The conical springs are mounted on the bottom instead of the traditional top mounting for greater stability and reduced vibrations during use. At the heart of the turntable is the synchronous motor that is completely decoupled from the main sub-chassis. It drives the heavy main inner and outer plates which that are made of solid aluminium.

The record and tonearm are isolated from their surroundings so minimal vibrations are captured during use. This allows the needle to pick up every nuance of the groove’s flank and precisely recreate every precious detail of the music. ‘Intelligent electronics’ power the motor and ensure it maintains a consistent speed at all times. An advanced toroidal transformer is located within the turntable for a unique 16v power system.

TD 1600 is equipped with the tried and tested TP92. This classic 9-inch tonearm is made from a highly precise and internally dampened aluminium tube. An anti-resonance ring mounted on the outside of the tube, in a carefully calculated position, further quietens the tonearm tube. The TD1600 has good connectivity with a balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA output.Thorens TD 1600 and TD 1601

In comparison, the upgraded TD 1601 has lots more added features to enhance user pleasure. For example, the unit has a second mini motor that lowers and raises the tonearm in and out of the groove at the touch of a button. Setting it apart from the 1600, the 1601 has a small but strong tightened thread made of steel which connects the sub-chassis with a steel pin on the bottom and prevents it from staggering. 1601 also has the added feature of contact-less auto shutoff. The Thorens TD 1600 and TD 1601 both have a balanced XLR and an unbalanced RCA output and share the same unique 16v main motor toroidal transformer to provide stable power at all times.
