Product Description
Chord Rumour X is based on the original Rumour which was Chord's second attempt at producing a speaker cable following on from the Myth and Legend copper and polyethylene flat cables in single and bi-wire configuration. This latest version of Rumour has been carefully developed to deliver even better sound quality in a wide range of systems.
Rumour Legacy
Chord investigated silver-plated conductor speaker cables combined with PTFE insulation as well as twisted pair conductor configurations instead of the heavy gauge parallel conductors that were the standard for speaker cables. By twisting the conductors together, they could hear the noise floor of the system improve and reached an ideal twist ratio which the cable was designed around.
When launched in 1996, Chord Rumour was one of the smallest speaker cables available (16 AWG). It sounded a lot bigger than it looked, it carried detail and dynamics really well and it was more coherent than just about any other cable around.
As people got over the size and listened, rather than looked, it became a very popular cable. Apart from cosmetic changes it remained unchanged for many years. The size, the colour and the performance mean it’s still a popular cable.
Material Upgrade
Previous versions of Rumour speaker cables used PTFE insulation (often referred to as Teflon) and until the arrival of Taylon, this was our “go to” material. Although expensive, PTFE offered the best performance. Material technology is constantly developing and improving and alternatives to PTFE are now available.
While the high cost of Taylon prevents use in all ranges, a suitable family of insulation materials known as XLPE (Cross-linked Polyethylene) was found to be a suitable alternative. One version of this material, following listening tests, proved to be clearly better than the PTFE in Rumour speaker cable – now known as Rumour X.

Suspected my Audiolab 6000 / Bluesound / Q Acoustics system had more to give and this new cable has proven me correct. I have only had it in place for a few days so I suspect it will still need more time to fully burn in but the difference was instant when I swapped out my old cables. It's like cleaning a mirror you hadn't realised was grubby, all of a sudden you can see more clearly. Same with this cable, highs and mids I thought were good before are now crisper and more precise. Lows are better controlled with notes being better defined and less likely to get muddled or confused. I have Chord cables throughout my system now and each one has bought a step improvement. May seem like a lot of money for a piece of speaker wire to some people but definitely worth it in my opinion.
