Product Description
The Horus 6B is a superlative bookshelf speaker from Elipson. It uses all of Elipson’s expertise, to provide remarkable musicality. It is a two-way bass reflex design with a power handling of 70W RMS. The elegant design features an articulate extension to the bass, which is remarkable for its size. This is a versatile speaker that can be used as a stereo pair or as a multi-channel speaker in a surround sound system. Three high-grade finishes are available. This can be a great-sounding speaker for the price.
Drivers
The Horus 6B has a 130mm bass unit with a cellulose pulp cone coated with glass fibre. This aids with rigidity and resists warping. The tweeter is a 25mm silk dome unit with a neodymium magnet. The drivers work well together to give a cohesive sound. The frequency response is 55Hz to 25 kHz with a recommended amplifier power of 30 to 120w. The crossover frequency is 3kHz.
Why two-way speakers?
Prior to the 1940s most speakers had a single cone. This was fine for the low bandwidth sound of early radio but the speakers began to struggle when better quality audio became available. In the early 1940s Disney pioneered speakers with multiple drivers. Two-way speakers split the sound spectrum up between low and high frequencies. Due to the size of the cone larger speakers are not good at reproducing, short-wavelength, high-frequency sounds.
As a result, a tweeter is added, these are much smaller than the bass unit. As a result, they are more efficient at producing sounds above about 3kHz. This is known as the crossover frequency. To prevent overloading the tweeter must only receive the higher frequencies. To achieve this a passive high pass filter, or crossover, is built into two-way speakers.
Cabinet
The 6B’s cabinet is available in three finishes: Black - Carbon / Light Wood - Beige / Walnut - Dark Grey. The contrast between the front panel and cabinet makes it easy for the speakers to blend in with any décor. Moreover, the black version blends in nicely with surround sound systems. Notably, the front bass port allows for easy placement of the speaker.
Why bass ported?
The sound from bass drivers goes backward into the cabinet as well as forwards. Bass ports allow for a better bass response with smaller cabinets. They allow low-frequency sounds to exit from the internal speaker chamber. The ports have a significant effect on the overall bass output. However, bass-ported speakers need careful placing, especially if the port is on the rear. However, with the 6B, the port is on the front making this less critical.
Who are Elipson?
Elipson is a French company that began in 1940 with the production of the “BS50 Chambord". This was a spherical speaker. A large range of unusually shaped speakers followed. This has continued to this day with the legacy range that has spherical elements in its design. Elipson also makes a range of fine turntables and amplifiers.
