Product Description
Elipson Music Centre HD is an all-in-one unit that just needs speakers. You can connect to any online streaming service such as Qobuz, Spotify, Tidal, Deezer, Internet Radio, etc and you can also play your stored music files via USB. There is also a built-in FM and DAB tuner with 40 pre-sets. Unusually for a recent design, it also has slot-loading CD player – making it a great choice for enjoying your CD collection as well.
This unit features a powerful class D amplifier boasting 2 x 120 watts of power. Notably, the CD player can play all disc types including MP3 and WMA. The music centre also comes with a remote control.
Powerful class D amplifier
Intelligent, compact and efficient is the ethos of class D amplifiers. The Elipson HD music centre uses ICE amplifier modules that deliver 120 Watts per channel.
Linear amplifiers that use bipolar transistors generate a lot of heat and need beefy power supplies. As a result class D amplifiers were developed and are nearly 90% efficient and are used in compact systems. These use high-speed switching MOSFET output transistors. The audio signal is modulated onto a high-frequency carrier, using pulse width modulation. If the pulses are closer together the output volume will be higher.
Great connectivity and versatility
The Connect HD Music Centre has versatile connectivity, with an optical digital input as well as HD streaming capability via Wi-fi. The Bluetooth link is APT-X HD compatible with 24-bit audio files. There is also a preamp output, for connection to an external amplifier.
For more powerful bass there is a subwoofer output. This has an adjustable crossover frequency setting, from 50 to 200 Hz. This allows you to match the cut-off of the main speakers. There is also a socket for an external radio aerial as well as a socket for headphones.
CD player and FM/DAB tuner
Another feature of the Connect HD music system is the slot-loading CD player. This has touch controls below the slot. There is also an FM RDS/DAB tuner built-in. Finally, there is an optional stand that will integrate the unit into your living room with ease.
Analogue FM is still with us, as is the Radio Data System or RDS. DAB or Digital Audio Broadcasting is also widely available in the UK. The CD player will play all types of discs including MP3/WMA as well as CD and CDR.
Who is Elipson?
Elipson is a French company that was founded before WW II. Joseph Leon was key in starting the company. In 1940 his research led to the BS50 Chambord speaker. This featured an elliptical reflector inside a spherical enclosure. Since then Elipson has focused on spherical speakers. The key component is the reflector which concentrates all of the acoustic energy. The sound is then full of precision and accuracy and can fill large rooms, due to its efficiency. Today the unique spherical aspects of the Elipson range make them stand out as icons of design.
