Yamaha Corporation began as Nippon Gakki Co. Ltd in 1897 a mere ten years after founder Torakusu Yamaha built his first reed organ. Yamaha then moved onto producing pianos and establishing Yamaha Music School, which teaches courses in keyboard, guitar and drum playing as well as singing. In 1954, Yamaha produced its first Hi-Fi player demonstrating transparent sound and durability widely used in Audio Pro broadcast studios.

To mark the 100th year anniversary, Nippon Gakki changed their name to Yamaha Corporation, and sought to expand with an acquisition of Steinberg Media Technologies in 2005 and subsequently L Bosendorfer Klavierfabrik and NEXO S.A. three years later.
