Product Description
The iFi Audio LAN iSilencer is designed to filter any electrical noise from your Ethernet network connection. Interference on the network can degrade the audio signal and cause dropouts. The iSilencer can reduce the noise floor as well as interference. The unit can be connected to your router, switch or directly to your Ethernet wall socket. Moreover, the iSilencer can be used with Gigabit Ethernet, and protects against Transient Voltages. TVS protection stops surges and voltage transients from causing interference. Galvanic isolation is also provided.
Galvanic isolation explained
To help with isolation the iSilencer has a zero-jitter memory buffer and galvanically isolated inputs to eliminate digital distortion. Galvanic isolation works by separating electrical circuits. In this way audio signals can pass without differences in ground potential or AC power interference. No direct connection is permitted with galvanic isolation. The isolation can be done by either using a transformer, or optically, using an opto-isolator.
Ethernet noise.
Network cabling was never designed to transmit sensitive digital audio. There can be long cable runs, that act like aerials picking up noise. Moreover, none of the internal conductors are shielded. Additionally, some Ethernet cables carry power as well as data, adding even more magnetic fields and noise. As a result, adding a filter will always improve the audio quality of a streaming system.
