Product Description
KEF R6 Meta centre speaker is the largest centre channel in KEF’s latest R-series range and features Meta materials to improve performance. A Metamaterial sound damper has been added to the Uni-Q array that provides midrange and hi frequency sound, in one unit. There are also two 150mm hybrid aluminium bass drivers.
A centre speaker is important to make dialogue clear and more immersive. The R6 has bigger Bass drivers and a higher power handling capability than the R2 centre speaker.
What is Metamaterial
Metamaterial is a material that has been modified so that it behaves in a different way to its solid form. The KEF metamaterial is made of ABS plastic, that has been modified so that it acts as a very good sound absorber. With the Meta range, a shaped piece of this material has been placed behind the tweeter, in the Uni-Q array. This prevents any sound from impacting the midrange cone. As a result distortion is reduced and the sound should be more natural.
Amazing Frequency Response and Power Handling
For a centre speaker the R6 has a wide frequency response of 65Hz to 28khz with a power handling of 250W. The R6 uses two 150mm bass drivers, one on either side of the Uni-Q driver array. This array has been developed over many years and is now in it’s 12th iteration, with Metamaterials.
Uni-Q Array
The entire R range uses the Uni-Q driver array. This is a two way unit in one housing. It comprises a 25mm Aluminium domed tweeter and a 125mm midrange unit. This combined unit acts a single point source giving a more dispersed sound. The pole has also been upgraded, it now has symmetrical aluminium demodulation rings. This results in less voice coil impedance variations for more natural vocals.
150mm Bass Units
The R6 Meta has two large 150mm bass units. They feature a two-part construction, with an aluminium upper cone bonded to a lower paper cone. As a result, the structure is very rigid and resists warping. This makes the bass tighter and reduces resonances. Additionally, there is a modified motor structure that creates a more even magnetic field. There is also a new suspension that reduces distortion and colouration.
New Cabinet Geometry
The cabinets in the R series, use Constrained Layer Damping bracing. This is a method where the baffle plates are mounted using a flexible material than prevents resonances. It also prevents any vibration from reaching the other drivers. As a result, the cabinet is very inert, creating a sold vibration-free platform for the drivers. The sound is accurate and clean with no colouration.
KEF R Series Meta
KEF are based in Britain and make a range of domestic speakers along with specialist speakers for professional use. The R series is a mid-priced range with three floorstanders as well as a set of stand mounted speakers. There is also a two sizes of centre speaker with the R6 Meta being the larger alternative to the R2 Meta.
