Product Description
The Klipsch R-50PM Active Speakers, is a 60 Watts per channel active speaker, that also features a built in DAC. The R-50PM Is higher powered than the R-40PM, as well as having a larger cabinet, and bigger 5.25” woofer. The woofer features a spun copper cone for stunning bass. Moreover, the tweeter is a 1” aluminium domed unit, fitted into a Traktix horn assembly. This provides a widely dispersed sound. Lastly, the R-50PM has a phono input for MM cartridges. This can also be switched to take a line level input. Other connectivity includes Bluetooth to connect your mobile devices.
The Klipsch Tractrix horn
The characteristic Klipsch horn is prominent, with the R-50PM Active Speakers. A high-quality aluminium domed tweeter sits in the centre of the horn. This delivers stunning highs, and never loses clarity even at high volumes. Notably horns are more efficient than conventional high frequency units. The sound is accurate and needs less power. The distortion is also lower. Finally, another advantage of horn technology is sound dispersion. The soundscape becomes wider and the listening position less critical.
Bluetooth and digital inputs
Connectivity is good, as the R-50PM Active Speakers has a range of both analogue and digital inputs. There is an optical digital input as well as USB. Moreover, the phono input can be switched to line level for connecting a CD player or similar. Mobile devices can be connected via Bluetooth. Notably, for even more bass, there is a subwoofer output. On top of this, there is a 3.5mm input and the second speaker is hard-wired to a set of binding posts.
Dynamic bass EQ
As the R-50PM is an active speaker, with a built in DAC. Digital Sound Processing (DSP) is available. Klipsch have used this to lower the bass response by using a dynamic bass EQ circuit. The frequency response is 60Hz to 20 kHz without active bass. The active bass circuit lowers this to 52 Hz. However, for even more bass, there is also a subwoofer output.
Class D amplification
The active speaker amplification in the R-50PM, is provided by a Class D amplifier. These are more efficient than linear amplifiers, and are normally used where space is at a premium, such as inside a speaker. They also generate less heat and use less power. Another advantage of class D is noise performance. Linear circuits tend to pick up noise, while Class D, digital amplifiers remain digital right up to the speaker.
