Product Description
Martin Logan Focus ESL C34A is an active electrostatic centre speaker, designed to be a voice match for other Martin Logan electrostatic speakers in a multi-channel set-up.
The Focus ESL C34A features the dynamics of a 34” wide Xstat electrostatic panel along with the detailed imaging of two Folded Motion XT tweeters. There are also four 6.5” woofers driven by a 250 watt class D amplifier. The sound is controlled by a 24-bit Vojtko designed DSP engine, with ARC Active Room Correction.
Focus ESL C34a is timbre matched to the Masterpiece series so that you get an integrated sound stage. The sound will thrill, and give you a coherent movie or music experience.
What is ARC, Active Room Correction?
Active Room Correction is a software algorithm that measures the actual sound in the listening room, and corrects the overall response so that the frequency response is flat. Good bass performance is important, with a centre channel speaker, to achieve realism. While normally used for dialogue, the centre channel can also carry special effects information. So why do you need room correction? The shape of a room and its contents can cause all kinds of unwanted effects. For example, sound bouncing off the walls can cause phase shifts. While soft furnishings can absorb sound. This causes peaks and troughs in the response. ARC uses a microphone to monitor the sound of your room and then correct for any anomalies.
PoweredForce bass system
The four 6.5” woofers in the ESL C34A are enclosed in their own shielded boxes. This has the effect of preventing boominess. The drivers also have low-distortion aluminium cone drivers, that use PoweredForce technology to deliver well blended bass that goes down as low as 45Hz.
Another key feature of PoweredForce bass is the DSP engine. DSP stands Digital Sound Processing and is a sophisticated software algorithm that constantly monitors and corrects the sound.
Dual folded motion tweeters for stunning highs
Two folded motion tweeters are used by the ESL C34A centre speaker. These are mounted directly behind the panel. This mounting eliminates high frequency diffraction and they also have better phase coherence and time alignment, as well as superior dispersion characteristics.
Folded Motion XT tweeters work by moving air perpendicular to the folded ridges of the diaphragm, similar to an accordion. As a result, this extremely low mass diaphragm squeezes air. The main advantage is efficiency and a lightning-fast transient response. For example, the excursion is 90% less than a domed tweeter. There is a bigger radiating area and lower distortion.
Powerful 250 Watt Class D amplifier
The ESL C34A features a powerful 250 Watt class D amplifier. Class D is almost 90% efficient and generates little heat, compared to conventional linear amplifiers. It also needs less power to operate and the output consists of a series of high frequency pulses that are modulated with the audio signal. This is known as Pulse Width Modulation. The closer together the pulses the higher the output. These pulses are reintegrated back into sound, by using a low pass filter choke. The output transistors are usually MOSFETS as they can switch at high speed.
Vojtko voiced crossover
A crossover is used by the ESL C34A, to separate the audio band, so that the sound is fed to the low and high frequency drivers at the correct level. The crossover is voiced by Vojtko so that the mid range clarity is full of detail and sonic nuances. They are hand built using only the best components, such as audio grade polypropylene capacitors.
Additionally, the air-core coils use Martin Logan’s proprietary technology to give vanishingly low levels of distortion. Another factor with electrostatic panels is the matching transformer. This has to be carefully designed to provide a transparent link from the amplifier to the panel. New materials now make this possible
Airframe design
Another feature of Martin Logan's electrostatic speakers is the curvilinear Airframe. This is more than a styling feature, it also helps with sound dispersion. The rigid aluminium frame supports the panel and the curve helps to prevent ‘beaming’ so that the listening area is larger. It also reduces intermodulation distortion as well as any sound coming from the sides.
