Product Description
Musical Fidelity M8s 700M Mono Power Amplifier is part of the M8 range which has a design aim of maximum performance with minimum cost. As a result, the Musical fidelity M8s 700m amplifier is a massively powerful and as much of a capable unit as you could hope to find at this level.
It can provide 700W into 8 ohms and 1300w into 4 Ohms. Distortion is very low with a 0.001% figure at 1kHz. Distortion is only 0.005% at 50kHz, well above the audible range. The sound is neutral with a high resolution it also has very low noise levels. Connectivity is simplicity itself with both RCA and XLR inputs as well as two sets of speaker terminals. Available in black or silver.
High power and low distortion
The M8 700M is a derivation of the massive 1Kw Titan amplifier, at an affordable price. The M8 provides 700W into 8 ohms with a fully balanced configuration. Distortion is very low and noise levels are negligible. The amplifier delivers massive dynamics as well as delicate detail and great precision. The M8 can drive any speaker and can be bi-wired. The M8 preamp is also a good match for a pair of M8 mono blocks.
Why mono block amplifiers?
With mono block amplifiers you gain absolute separation of each channel. The placement of the amps is easier and with two power supplies and two power cables there can be no crosstalk. They take up more room but will usually have an advantage over two amplifiers in one box i.e. stereo power amplifier alternatives.
Electronic components
Electronic components can be the lowest cost parts in any amplifier, so all things being equal the layout of the circuit board between one competing product and another is paramount – i.e. the topology is important for performance. For example the amount of noise induced.
It is also important the high-power amplifiers can handle the high currents needed, without any PCB heating. The PCB tracks also needs to have a short signal path. Musical Fidelity have certainly succeeded in creating a hugely capable amplifier with the M8s 700M as the specs mentioned above attest to, with very low distortion and huge power reserves.
Heatsinks
On the other hand heatsinks are expensive and bulky. They do not contribute to the sound quality. As a result, straightforward extrusions can be used over more expensive custom machined heatsinks. The sound quality is maintained while keeping costs lower than some other high end amplifiers.
Front panels and metalwork
Perhaps the most expensive thing to produce is the front panel. Machining and finishing are very expensive with about 98% of the cost of a unit being in the metalwork. This contributes nothing to the sound. As a result, the M8 series uses custom made extrusions but there is nothing excessive. The heatsinks are also nicely finished but do not have any excessive design elements. Finally, the front panels are minimalist and functional with no bells and whistles.
