Product Description
The Primare DM36 DAC upgrade is a plugin module that replaces the DM35 DAC that is used in various Primare modular amplifiers and preamps. It is a new and redesigned digital to Analogue converter with a resolution up to PCM 384kHz and DSD 256. The chipset is the renowned ESS ES9068A.
Notably, the overall performance is improved over previous versions with a rich and lifelike sound. Moreover, the soundstage is larger and has a three-dimensional effect. Lastly, MQA files can be decoded and played back.
Good connectivity and upsampling capability
Four optical inputs are provided with the Primare DM36 DAC upgrade. There are also two RCA coaxial inputs. Playback resolutions of up to 192kHz/24-bit are possible with these inputs. Additionally, there is a USB input for PC connection with a resolution of 384kHz/32bit and DSD256 (11.2Mhz).
There is also an RCA coaxial socket for the digital output. Lastly, new with this upgrade is the upsampling capability. 16 bit/44.1kHz and 24bit/48kHz signals can be upscaled to 24bit/88.2kHz and 24bit/96kHz respectively. This provides a smoother sound.
MQA playback
The Primare DM36 DAC upgrade can process Master Quality Assured, lossless files. Both Prisma and Primare CD sources can be used. Consequently, the DM36 can decode 384kHz MQA Tidal master files. MQA files are relatively small but are designed to be lossless. MQA-encoded music is available from the Tidal Masters streaming service as well as MQA-encoded CDs. Playback equipment has to be licensed to playback MQA files.
What is a DAC?
DAC stands for Digital to Analogue Converter. The DAC converts the ones and zeros of the digital audio signal back into music. Notably, some of the Primare amplifier and preamp models have a plugin unit that can easily be upgraded. Hence the new Primare DM36 DAC upgrade. Most integrated amplifiers do not have this feature.
