    Product Description

The Puritan Audio PSM136 Studio Master Purifier is a six-output precision symmetrically balanced mains purifier. Each output is fully independent and has 39 finely tuned filter elements. Mains purifiers are thought to improve the definition of music as well as remove any noise and interference from the mains supply. The unit rebalances the mains sinewave removing any DC from the supply. This helps to stop transformers from saturation giving a better sound. Moreover, the unit has surge protection so is designed to ensure that lightning strikes will not destroy your equipment.

Common and differential mode noise filtering.

The PSM136 Studio Master Purifier is a top-of-the-range mains purifier from Puritan Audio. The high-quality components are mounted in a rugged, magnetically shielded enclosure. Firstly, the circuitry removes any DC components from the mains. This helps to prevent toroidal transformers from saturating. Moreover, the internal wiring is made of OFC copper that is silver plated and protected with PTFE insulation. The unit has two large toroidal chokes that are used for differential mode filtering. There are also components that block common mode interference preventing any mutual interaction between the connected equipment.

What is common mode and differential mode noise?

Two types of noise can be present on a mains supply. The first is known as common mode noise. The interference is present on both live and neutral wires and flows in the same direction. Common mode noise is filtered by using a toroidal choke that has two windings. One for each wire. The choke is used with a capacitor that shorts any noise to the earthed metal case. Differential mode noise flows in the opposite direction in each wire and is filtered out using a capacitor and inductor combination. The PSM136 Studio Master Purifier uses several levels of filtering to remove different frequencies.

    Why DC blocking?

DC on the mains is a common problem. It can be caused by domestic appliances placing an unbalanced load on the mains supply. As a result, the mains sinewave is distorted with the positive and negative cycles becoming uneven. This places a small amount of DC on the supply. Toroidal transformers, as used in amplifiers, are very sensitive to this. Only a small amount of DC, around 500mV. Can cause the transformer to saturate. This can cause the efficiency to drop and the audio to be degraded. As a result, the PSM136 Studio Master Purifier has circuitry to remove any DC from the supply.

    Why, power conditioners?

There are many sources of interference, that can get into the mains supply. These can come from external sources such as thunder storms. Long cable runs can also act as aerials dragging in Radio and Wi-Fi signals. Inside the home domestic appliances, such as washing machines can put switching noise onto the supply. Additionally, most people will have heard the crackling noises on audio equipment caused by light switches, as well as mobile phone signals. The PSM136 Studio Master Purifier is designed to filter all of this out. Moreover, the unit also has surge protection, so that your valuable audio equipment will not be destroyed by a lightning strike.
