Product Description
The Ruark Audio RS1 Subwoofer was developed to go with the Ruark MR1 Bluetooth speakers. The subwoofer has the same elegant design, with a wood-grained end panel and grey cloth covering. Notably, the unit then gives the system deep controlled bass that you can feel. The subwoofer will automatically turn on when it detects a signal and off again if no signal is detected, after a timed interval.
There is good output protection as well as soft clipping if overloaded. Controls are included for the level and the crossover frequency. Lastly, This unit will give the bass from smaller speakers a boost with its 100-watt class D amplifier without losing musicality.
Controlled and musical bass
The bass from the Ruark Audio RS1 Subwoofer is deep, controlled, and musical. The enclosure and custom drivers have been carefully optimized and tuned to provide a naturally extended bass without overpowering the music. Consequently, The 100-watt amplifier is more than enough to augment the bass.
Powerful class D amplifier
As with many active speakers, the Ruark Audio RS1 Subwoofer uses a powerful Class D amplifier. Class D is essentially digital throughout the entire signal path. The output is made up of a series of high-frequency pulses.
The closer together they are the higher the output. This is known as pulse code modulation (PCM). The digital output means that the MOSFET output transistors are either fully on or fully off making the unit up to 90% efficient. Another advantage is less heat generation.
Connecting a subwoofer
Connecting a subwoofer and the type you buy depends on your audio setup. The Ruark Audio RS1 Subwoofer is intended for systems that have a dedicated line-level subwoofer output. Older amplifiers may not have this. As a result, some subwoofers come with speaker-level inputs.
These can be connected to the speaker terminals of an amplifier. Often amplifiers have more than one set of outputs. Once connected there are usually a couple of settings to check. The level control needs to be adjusted so that the bass level is not too high.
Also, the crossover frequency should be set for the best results. Finally, the phase switch needs to be set for the highest bass output. If this is incorrect the subwoofer phase will be the opposite of your main speakers, muting the bass.
About Ruark
Ruark is about more than just the functionality of a unit. Looks and musicality are also important. Ruark has a following because of the cabinet designs as well as the sound quality. The Ruark Audio RS1 Subwoofer is more than just an ugly black box, with its attractive grill cloth and wood finish.
Ruark began by manufacturing speakers in 1985 and soon became renowned for their build and sound quality. By the turn of the century, the audio scene had changed and Ruark began to develop DAB and Smart audio components.
