Product Description
The Sennheiser Ambeo Mini soundbar is the latest and most compact release in the Ambeo Soundbar series. Notably, it can be connected to up to four Ambeo Sub subwoofers. The stylish design is available in black only. There are three connectors on the rear. The connectors are power, an HDMI socket, and a USB socket. Additionally, WIFI and Bluetooth are built in.
Format support includes Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, MPEG-H, and Sony 360. Next, you can stream from Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, and Tidal Connect. There is also voice control via Alexa. Finally, at only 67cm long the unit will fit comfortably under smaller TVs.
What is Dolby Atmos?
Unusually for a small unit the Ambeo Mini soundbar has Dolby Atmos support. This normally needs upward-firing speakers to provide the overhead sound needed for Dolby Atmos. However, this unit uses digital processing to give a phantom speaker effect.
This is designed to provide an immersive 3D effect. Dolby Atmos is a 3D system first used in cinemas to provide a 3D sound field using sound objects.
Room compensation and app
The Ambeo Mini soundbar is easy to set up using the provided app. This is comprehensive and uses built-in microphones to monitor the sound in the room. This then equalizes the sound to best match the environment. It also calculates where the phantom speaker sound should come from.
Dolby Atmos can use up to eleven speakers to achieve an immersive effect. With speakers mounted in the ceiling and at the sides of the room. The sound is mixed using sound objects that can be placed anywhere in the 3D sound field. The app can be used to change the sound modes. However, there is also a supplied remote control.
What is Class D?
Class D amplification is used with the Ambeo Mini soundbar. In fact, there are six drivers in total. Four full-range drivers and two subwoofer units. 250 watts of amplification are provided in Class D. Class D is often used in active speakers as it is close to 90% efficient.
It can provide a powerful output in a compact space with much less heat generation than linear amplifiers. The sound is clear with plenty of detail. Class D amplifiers use a stream of high-frequency pulses to generate the audio.
This is known as Pulse Code Modulation(PCM). The closer together the pulses are the higher the output. This pulse stream is then fed to a low-pass filter to recover the audio.
Why a soundbar?
Soundbars are an easy way to augment the often poor sound provided by flat-screen TVs. The Ambeo Mini soundbar is small enough to fit under smaller TVs and can provide a Dolby Atmos effect. There is also no need for remote speakers and trailing leads, normally associated with surround sound systems.
The Ambeo Mini soundbar can also be used as a stand-alone, smart speaker with its built-in voice control and streaming capability
