Product Description
Technics SA-C600EB streaming mini system is versatile and will play almost anything, built around a small form factor and offering excellent value for a well featured system.
Music source options include a built-in CD player and a phono input for a moving magnet (MM) cartridge equipped turntable. It also features a range of digital streaming features, including internet radio as well as popular streaming services like Spotify. It also features a built-in DAB/ FM tuner.
The Space Tune system is included, which compensates for environmental factors in the room. The built-in Class D amplifier has an output of 60 watts per channel, making it a good match for a range of speakers.
Digital signal path and amplifier
The audio signal path with the SA-C600EB, is mostly digital, except for the phono input, which obviously needs to be analogue. With the majority of the signal path being digital, there is nowhere for noise to be introduced. Also, the Jitter Elimination and Noise Shaping (JENO) engine, eliminates any noise and jitter, for a smooth and warm sound.
Class D amplifier
Class D amplifiers are used by the SA-C600EB. Class D amplifiers are almost 90% efficient and generate little heat. They also use less power than linear amplifiers. Class D amplifiers use high frequency pluses to generate the audio signal. This is known as Pulse Width Modulation. The closer together the pulses the higher the output. The output is then applied to a low pass filter to recover the audio. Finally, the output transistors are usually MOSFETs that can switch at a high frequency.
Twin power supply
The power supply is critical in units that have multiple stages and different gain requirements. As a result the SA-C600EB uses a twin switch mode power supply. The power amplifier section has its own power supply with two transformers and shielded wiring. There is also a second power supply for the digital circuits. This eliminates any chance of mutual interference. Moreover, the JENO engine clock has its own power supply. This is designed to give a transparent soundstage.
Built-in phono preamp
The SA-C600EB has a built-in phono preamp – or phono stage, suitable for moving magnet (MM) cartridges. This also has its own internal power supply. A low noise power supply is especially important with high gain circuits, like those in a phono preamp. The signal level is only a few Millivolts, and a clean power supply is essential. As a result, the phono preamp enclosure is also shielded from external interference.
Space Tune room compensation
The position of loudspeakers can affect the sound. For example, the sound can bounce of the walls, resulting in muddy sound. As a result, the SA-C600EB has room compensation settings, known as Space Tune. These can be adjusted in two ways.
There are four-pre-sets. Free, wall, Corner and shelf. Additionally, Space Tune can be set by using the Technics Audio Centre app (iOS only). There is also an L/R custom feature to set each speaker individually. The result, is the best possible sound quality, in any location.
Connectivity
Connectivity is good with a line-level input as well as a phono input for moving magnet (MM) cartridges. There is also an F connector socket for the built-in DAB/FM tuner. A subwoofer output is provided along with two digital inputs. Speaker outputs are via standard binding posts and there is a USB input for external drives or a PC. Finally, there is a wired Ethernet port as well as Wi-Fi.
Streaming support
The SA-C600EB has good streaming support with Hi-res capability. It supports Bluetooth and AirPlay 2 as well as Spotify Connect and TIDAL. Chromecast is also built-in. Finally, it can also play MQA files. MQA stands for Master Quality Assured and gives the closest sound to the studio recording.
What is a streamer?
Most modern audio systems come with a streamer. A stream is essentially a digital audio signal that is sourced from a remote server. It can be an audio file or a service, such as a podcast or internet radio station. There are many different codecs and bit rates in use. Hence why the SA-C600EB has the JENO engine to convert all the other formats back into audio.
