Product Description
The Bowers & Wilkins 702 S3 Speakers are the flagship of the 700 series and feature the iconic tweeter-on-top configuration along with a Continuum coned midrange. Moreover, there are no less than three aerofoil-profiled bass drivers. The bass is profoundly deep and very articulate.
Additionally, the tweeter pod is milled from a solid piece of aluminium. This is designed to stop any resonances. The tweeter is a 25mm carbon dome unit while the midrange is 150mm in diameter. Lastly, the three bass drivers are 165mm in diameter. Overall the power handling is 200 Watts.
Top mounted tweeter pod
An iconic top-mounted tweeter is used by the Bowers & Wilkins 703 S3 Speaker. The housing is made of a solid block of aluminium. This is designed to inhibit resonant frequencies. It also features a longer elongated tube loading system. Notably, the design provides a more open sound with sweet treble.
Also, the whole unit is isolated from the rest of the cabinet. Next, the carbon-coned 25mm tweeter unit is specially designed for the 700 series. The new units offer a dramatic improvement over previous versions. As a result, the breakup frequency is pushed well above the human hearing range. The sound has pinpoint accuracy and detail.
Curved cabinet baffle
The 700 series features a curved baffle with chamfered edges. Flat-fronted cabinets can suffer from standing waves that cause phase shifts in the frequency response. Curved baffles break up these waves. Additionally, each drive unit sits in its own enclosure. This is designed to stop any mutual interference.
Composite coned bass/midrange unit
The Bowers & Wilkins 703 S3 Speaker features the renowned Continuum cone midrange unit. This drive unit is coned using a composite material that resists any abrupt transitions in the sound, providing a smoother output. Four key technologies are used by Bowers & Wilkins to create a natural and involving sound. Voices and instruments are full and precise with great transparency.
Bower and Wilkins technologies
Bowers & Wilkins have developed four key technologies that are used in the 700 series. The first is the Continuum composite cone material used in the midrange driver. This optimizes the important vocal frequencies. Second, the cones have advanced biomimetic suspensions. Thirdly, the FST surround creates a smooth transition between the cone and the surround. Lastly, the drivers are decoupled from the cabinet.
Aerofoil profile bass units
The Bowers & Wilkins 702 S3 Speaker has three 165mm aerofoil profiled cone bass units. The advanced cone was designed using computer modelling. This resulted in a cone with variable-thickness walls. The cone has optimal stiffness and rigidity where it is needed most. As a result, the bass is deep and controlled with little colouration.
Upgraded crossover
The crossover in the Bowers & Wilkins 702 S3 Speaker is a three-way design. This features a high pass filter for the tweeter and a band-pass filter for the midrange. The crossover splits the audio frequencies into bands for feeding to the respective drivers.
As the Bowers & Wilkins 702 S3 Speaker is a high-powered speaker capable of handling 200 Watts the components need to be able to withstand the power without drifting in value or going leaky. As a result, only top-quality parts are used.
