Product Description
The Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 Speaker is the largest stand-mounted design in the 700 series. It has a power handling of 120 watts and features a 25mm decoupled carbon dome tweeter along with a 165mm continuum cone bass/midrange unit. Moreover, the crossover has been upgraded for a flatter frequency response. The sound is smooth and powerful with plenty of scale and extension.
New carbon dome tweeter
The tweeter in the Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 speaker features a carbon dome for strength and resistance to breakups. It was specially designed for the 700 series and offers a considerable improvement over previous models. In fact, the breakup frequency is now 47kHz. This is well above the human hearing range. This gives a free and open sound.
Composite coned bass/midrange unit
The Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 Speaker features a curved cabinet front that is designed to reduce standing waves. Moreover, each driver sits in its own pod for complete isolation. As a result, there is no mutual interference, for a cleaner and more immersive sound.
Additionally, the composite cone of the Bass/midrange driver is designed to prevent any abrupt transitions. These can occur with lesser drivers. These technologies make the sound smoother with a natural presentation. Voices and instruments come alive with precision and transparency.
Bower and Wilkins technologies
All of the 700 series speakers use four key Bower and Wilkins-developed technologies. The first is the Continuum composite cone, the second is the FST surround design, Thirdly the cones feature biomimetic suspension and lastly midrange decoupling isolates the drivers from each other.
Upgraded crossover
The crossover used by the Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 Speaker has been upgraded for a flatter frequency response. The crossover is designed to split the audio frequency into bands so that the correct frequencies go to each speaker. In two way designs a high pass filter is used to feed the tweeter.
Also, the crossover has to be carefully designed to crossover at the correct frequency so that there is an overall flat response. It is important that top-quality capacitors are used as they have to last decades without changing value or going leaky.
Home cinema systems
The Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 Speaker can be used as part of a surround sound system. The 700 series features floor standers that can be used as the front left and right channels. Additionally, the stand-mounted designs can be used as the rear or side surround speakers. There are also two centre speakers in the 700 range.
