Product Description
The Bowers & Wilkins 707 S3 Speakers are the most compact of the 700 series floor-standers. The 700 series offers a higher specification than the 600 series and has the iconic tweeter-on-top configuration.
Additionally, this unit has a decoupled FST Continuum 150mm cone midrange driver. Also, there are twin 165 mm Bass drivers that have an aerofoil profile. The tweeter is a carbon dome 25mm unit. To improve the bass even more, there is a Flowport system in this bass reflex design.
Tweeter on top
The tweeter-on-top design is a characteristic of the Bowers & Wilkins 707 S3 Speakers. This new version is made of a solid block of aluminium that resists resonance and vibration. The new shape is more elongated and has a longer tube-loading system.
The carbon dome tweeters have been specially built for the 700 series and offer a dramatic improvement over previous versions. As a result, the tweeter produces a free and open sound. Lastly, the housing is carefully decoupled from the rest of the cabinet.
Composite Continuum coned midrange driver
The Bowers & Wilkins 707 S3 Speakers feature the renowned composite cone Continuum drivers. These are designed to avoid the abrupt transitions that can occur with fewer drivers. They provide a smoother sound and a more open and natural performance. Voices and instruments are presented with precision and transparency.
All of the 700 series features four key Bower & Wilkins technologies. The first is the continuum cone, the second is the FST technology, and the third is the Biomimetic Suspension and midrange decoupling. Lastly, decoupling ensures that there is no interference from the bass drivers.
Aerofoil profile bass drivers
Two aerofoil profile, domed woofers are a feature of the Bowers & Wilkins 707 S3 Speakers. The cone was computer-designed and as a result, has a variable thickness wall. This provides the optimal stiffness and rigidity where it is needed most. This results in deep and powerful bass with no odd resonances.
About crossovers
The Bowers & Wilkins 707 S3 Speakers are three-way designs. This means that they have a more complex crossover than two-way designs. The crossover is essentially a set of filters that deliver the correct frequency band to each driver. They have to be carefully designed to achieve a flat frequency response.
A high pass filter feeds the tweeter, while a bandpass filter feeds the midrange unit. The crossover is made up of inductors and capacitors. These have to be of high quality as they have to last decades without changing value or going leaky.
Home cinema systems
The 700 series also includes two centre speakers. This means that the Bowers & Wilkins 707 S3 Speakers can be used in a home cinema system. A basic 5.1 system comprises a front left and right channel along with two rear surround channels. There is also a centre speaker and a subwoofer. More complex surround sound systems can also be made using Bower and Wilkins speakers.
