Product Description
KLH Audio Kendall 2B speakers are the latest version of Kendall bookshelf speakers, a more compact alternative to the Kendall 2F floorstanders. The two-way design is hand built in Canada and the beautiful wood veneers are sourced from sustainable forests..
Kendall 2B features 6.5” woofers with black anodised aluminium cones and a Butyl rubber surround. This is designed to give a good transient response. The titanium domed 1” tweeter also boasts the KLH logo and the unit is ferrofluid cooled.
The bass reflex design features a rear firing bass port, for deeper bass and can be bi-wired, by removing the shorting link and connecting the woofer and tweeter to separate amplifiers.
6.5” woofer and bass reflex design
The Kendall 2B bookshelf speaker has a 6.5” woofer that uses a non-resonant die-cast aluminium basket. The cone also features a butyl rubber surround. The woofers have good power handling and an efficient design.
Speakers are complex devices with many parts. The first is the basket, This holds the cone and magnet assembly in place. Next comes the spider, which sits behind the cone and ensures that it returns to its start position. The return is also helped by the Kendall 2B’s rubber surround.
Another important part is the voice coil. This is wound around the end of the cone, which is cylinder shaped. The cylinder sits inside a groove in the magnet. When current is applied to the coil, it causes the cone to move, generating the sound.
Why a bass port?
Smaller bookshelf speakers can be lacking in bass. As a result, most have a bass port. This can be either to the front or rear. The Kendall 2B’s have a rear firing port that considerably enhances the bass output. Interestingly, studio, near field monitors use a sealed box construction. This gives greater accuracy but less bass. Of course, these are called bookshelf speakers but we always recommend using them on suitable speaker stands for the best possible sound.
Ferrofluid cooled tweeter
A 1” ferrofluid cooled tweeter, is used by the Kendall 2B Bookshelf speaker. This features a titanium dome and has a ceramic motor structure. This powerful design can handle high volumes without overheating and buckling. There is also improved linearity, delivering clean and sweet highs. Finally, high frequencies are directional. Therefore the Kendall 2B have a relatively large radiating area, to give better dispersion.
Cabinet construction
The cabinet is made of 3/4” MDF and has custom designed low resonance drive chambers. The cabinets are covered in real Walnut wood veneer, from sustainable sources. Computer modelling is used to get the best possible sound.
There are two sets of binding posts so the Kendall 2B’s can be bi-wired. Just remove the shorting links. Bi-wiring refers to the fact that the woofer and tweeter can be driven from separate amplifiers. These need to be specifically designed for the purpose, as they have to have the correct frequency range.
Crossover design
The built in crossover uses premium iron-core inductors as well as Mylar capacitors. The crossover splits the audio band into two. The crossover frequency is usually between 80 and 120Hz. Notably, It is essentially a high pass filter that blocks bass frequencies from getting to the tweeter.
