Product Description
MJ Acoustics Tremor subwoofer has a 10” woofer and a power output of 250 watts. It also has a small form factor, making it suitable for medium to large rooms. Thanks to its compact size, two Tremor subwoofers can easily be used on either side of a large screen.
The 10” woofer is a long throw unit and can produce a high sound pressure level. This makes the subwoofer ideal for the LFE signals provided by movies. The built-in Class D amplifier is efficient and has a high output power. Finally, MJ Acoustics has its own app, that can be used to control the Tremor from your listening position.
Long throw woofer
The Tremor’s woofer is a 10” unit with a long throw cone. The cabinet is compact and the speaker can output a high sound pressure level, for outstanding bass. Moreover, there is a bass port that fires towards the floor.
Ported enclosures are used to boost the bass response. They can be positioned either to the front or rear. However, subwoofers usually have a port on the base. This is great for movie effects such as explosions that will shake the room.
Super-efficient Class D amplifier
Class D amplifiers are more efficient than traditional linear amplifiers. In fact, they are over 90% efficient, moreover, they generate less heat and use less power. As a result, they are often used for active speakers, such as subwoofers.
Class D amplifiers use a stream of high frequency pulses, instead of the usual audio waveform. This is known as Pulse Code Modulation. The closer together the pulses are the greater the output. Due to the high frequencies involved the output transistors are usually MOSFETS. These can switch at a high frequency, unlike bipolar transistors.
Remote control and app
The Tremor is more controllable than many subwoofers. It comes with a remote control. Moreover, there is a remote eye pickup so that the subwoofer can be placed out of sight. The remote makes it easy to select one of the four user pre-sets settings. Additionally, there is an app that can be used on iOS or Android devices. The app can select different sources such as music or movies. It can also be used from the listening position.
Low frequency effects
Movies are usually recorded with a low frequency effects (LFE) Channel. This is in addition to the normal surround soundtracks. Notably, most normal speakers cannot reproduce the low frequencies required. However, subwoofers can. There are also some instruments, such as pipe organs, that go down very low. The Tremor subwoofer has a specific LFE input for the effects. As a result, you will not miss any of the action, with movies.
How to connect a subwoofer
Older amplifiers do not have a subwoofer output. Therefore, there are a couple of ways of connecting a subwoofer to this type of unit. Firstly, most reasonable quailty amplifiers have a second set of speaker outputs. This spare output can be connected to the high-level input on the subwoofer.
Alternatively, the subwoofer can be connected to the same output of the main speakers with an appropriate high-level cable (with MJ Acoustics also offer). However modern AV receivers will generally have an LFE/subwoofer output which can be connected via RCA subwoofer cable.
Who are MJ Acoustics?
MJ Acoustics was founded by John Jeffries who has a unique skill set, that was ideal for the manufacture of sub-bass systems. He has a background in acoustic sound engineering, electronics and computing. He also has experience with cabinet making. As a result, MJ has become one of the leading subwoofer manufacturers. The company is based in the UK and the units are hand-built in house. Reliability is the company ethos and all of the manufacturing processes are done with this in mind.
