Product Description
PS Audio Aspen FR30 speakers are the end result of fifty years of development, a larger and more flagship alternative to the FR20. The FR30 feature four 8” woofers and a stunning ‘space age’ cabinet design. These speakers were designed from the ground up with PS Audio’s own woofers, radiators, midrange units and tweeters.
This is a reference speaker with a no-compromise, phase correct crossover and a construction that does not colour the sound. Moreover, PS Audio have developed their own unique planar magnetic tweeter and midrange units. These are a cross between electrostatic and conventional drivers. As a result, they provide the best of both worlds. Finally, the four woofers and four passive radiators extend the bass down to 28Hz.
Phase correct crossover
The hardest job in speaker design is getting a seamless, phase correct output from a range of different driver technologies. This takes years of experience, and PS Audio have that experience. Few speakers have ever achieved a totally flat frequency response. However, the FR30 has a genuine flat response from 28Hz to 20kHz, with no peaks and troughs. As a result, the FR30 has a dynamic sound, with grace and slam. Flat response in theory means that what you hear is exactly what is on the recording, with no added colouration. Finally, to get the best out of the FR30, it comes with a placement guide and CD.
FR30 drivers
Over the last one hundred years many different speaker technologies have been used. Starting with horns and then coned speakers that used electromagnets. Later came fixed magnets, followed by electrostatic panels, for detail. Conventional tweeters have good dynamics but poor dispersion. As a result, PS Audio now use the best possible driver technologies for each section. This creates the perfect speaker.
Planar magnetic drivers for low distortion
Tweeters need to work without coloration or distortion. Notably, coned tweeters tend to breakup at high power levels. They also have relatively poor dispersion at high frequencies. As a result, PS audio have developed a new type of planar magnetic driver, for the FR30. Planar magnetic drivers have the speed of an electrostatic combined with the dynamics of a cone. This type of driver works by having a front and rear magnet, and a flat diaphragm, that has inherent linearity. The magnets are made of neodymium and have a ‘push-pull’ effect on the diaphragm. The result is no cone breakup and less distortion.
Stylish cabinets
The FR20 cabinet is a great piece of design, with all of the internal bracing needed to reduce resonance and vibration. The design is by the renowned Studio 63 and the curved shape with fit in with any décor. Moreover, the outside of the cabinet is carefully finished with 20 coats of hand-rubbed, high grade piano glass lacquer. Next, the front baffle is made of dense, well damped thermoset fibreglass resin. This material is very rigid and the baffle also has built in high frequency acoustic waveguides.
Four 8” woofers and passive radiators for stunning bass
The FR30 features four 8” woofers, that have high excursion cones. Moreover, the massive 20Kg speaker motors, drive the woofers with the same effortlessness as the tweeter and midrange units.
Any distortion is reduced by a split magnetic gap and a double Faraday ring. This creates a low inductance and a wide bandwidth. Additionally, the spider that centres the cone, is made of Nomex with stitched in lead wires.
Next, the bass is extended even more, thanks to four passive radiators that are mounted in the sides. Lastly, the woofer cones are made of a low mass PMI foam that has a strong carbon fibre skin.
FR30 are stunning flagship loudspeakers, designed to get the most out of our system - with suitable amplification, allowing you to hear things you may have never heard before from your music collection, while being honest to the original recording.
