Quad Z2 bookshelf speaker is the bigger brother to the Z1 and a step above the S2 model from Quad's S Series.
Quad's flagship Z ribbon range of loudspeakers incorporates a fresh sandwich tweeter construction. Z2 is an exceptionally robust, high power speaker delivering delicate sound.
Original Ribbon
The natural and dedicated sound of Quad’s original Corner Ribbon speaker was quickly championed by Hi-Fi press. Over the years, their engineers have refined this technology for optimal performance.
The Corner Ribbon speaker was unmatched by rivals thanks to Quad’s ethos of attaining the ‘Closest Approach to the Original Sound’ which still defines product development today.
Ribbon Upgrade
Z2 pays homage to the original Corner Ribbon design while adding the capability to handle modern high power amplifiers. Using a more robust composite sandwich substrate immerses the ribbon in an exceptionally strong magnetic field to yield ultra-high sensitivity.
Unlike conventional dome treble units, where the voice coil ‘motor’ is separate to the diaphragm, the Z2 ribbon is both diaphragm and motor. The result is delicate, smooth and transparent audio.
Smooth Integration
Based on the immense success of the ESL speaker, Z2’s extremely light and thin ribbon delivers signature accuracy and wide coverage. The larger 90 x 12mm true ribbon creates even higher sensitivity and bandwidth for greater dynamics and smoother integration with midrange frequencies.
Woven Glass Fibre
Both mid and bass drivers feature woven glass fibre cone geometry matched by the double-roll-surround to attain the smoothness and clarity offered by the ribbon treble unit.
The bass section uses an acoustic filter reflex system with a double-chamber filter that eliminates ‘chuffing’ generally associated with conventional port designs. Natural and unforced reproduction is maintained right down to the lowest frequencies.
Curved Cabinets
Available in a choice of piano lacquered black, white or rosewood finish, the skillfully veneered, one-piece curved structure of the Z2 makes it the central piece of any living room.

I have owned my Quad Z2 speakers for a month now. As previously mentioned, these need a lot of break-in time, at least 75 hours. Once broken in, and this is important, the speakers are fed a good signal through good cables, these speakers can sing! The ribbons are superb at rendering detail in a very pleasing way, and Quad did a magnificent job at integrating the 175mm midwoofer with the ribbon. I use my Z2 speakers with a pair of Raymond Lumley monoblocks amps (valves). My Quads also seem to like silver wire for speaker cable however this could be a system related matter. I would highly recommend an audition should you be in the market for a stand mounted speaker and you demand the best for these are the best stand mounted speakers I have heard! -

set up on custom oak stands 550 high from Gee -nius .
system ARISTON rd 11 /JELCO 750D/ GOLDRING 1042/ANGLE AUDIO REF PHONO. QUAD 99 cdp- 99pre.- 99 monoblocks,
first impressions very disappointing, flat, boomy, no trebble,. CD worse,
checked all leads, still flat.
re-connected the 21L's wonderful again.
took two week of perseverance with gradual improvement, now quite stunning
Quad recommend 50 hours running in, and it needs that/
