English Electric was a British industrial manufacturing brand originally founded in 1918. Most known for their tram, railway, and aviation products, today they resume business with consumer electronics tailored towards the audiophile community.
The English Electric brand arose with the amalgamation of five companies who had specialised in the manufacturing of airplanes, armaments and munitions throughout the first world war. They joined forces after the armistice of the first world war and were in business up until 1968 when the company became defunct. English Electronic specialised in the manufacturing of electrical equipment, railway locomotive, motors and transformers in their early days. They then moved on to consumer electronics, computers and most notably, aviation.
In their most active period English Electric were class-leaders in the development of trams, railways and aviation inventions, specifically the English Electric Trains. From 1921, the company began manufacturing their own aircraft with the creation of the Wren airplane which was followed by the Ayr and Kingston in 1924, Canberra in 1949 and most notably the English Electric P1.A/Lightning Jet in 1954.
