Wharfedale DX-3 5.1 Speaker Package

The Wharfedale DX-3, 5.1 Speaker Package is an award-winning speaker set for normal stereo or surround sound systems. The speakers are small enough to go anywhere yet pack a mighty punch. This is an inexpensive set with a remarkable sound, that is punchy detailed, and expansive.

The sound is much more extensive than a soundbar and the small size will not dominate even the smallest room. The mini DX-3 speakers have a power handling of 100 Watts. The set includes a quality centre speaker and an active subwoofer with an output of 70 Watts.

The DX-3 mini speaker-75mm bass unit

The Wharfedale DX-3 is only 19cm high and is based on the renowned Diamond 12 stand-mounted speaker. The Wharfedale DX-3 5.1 Speaker Package includes four DX-3s and The speaker's cabinet features an additional panel that enhances resonance control.

The 75mm bass mid-range driver is made of a woven polypropylene mix that features a combination of lightness, strength, and rigidity. Moreover, the sound has low colouration and impressive speed. These are all characteristics of closed box designs, with precision sound instead of mega-bass. However, this package also comes with a subwoofer.

19mm silk domed tweeter

The Wharfedale DX-3 5.1 Speaker Package's DX-3 speakers feature a 19mm silk domed tweeter. The tweeter is based on a modified Diamond-12 tweeter and the crossover has been revised to take advantage of the new profile.

The result is a seamless blend across the frequency range and low colouration over a wide listening angle. This makes positioning less critical.

The DX-3 centre speaker

The Wharfedale DX-3 5.1 Speaker Package comes with a quality centre speaker. This is only 31cm wide but features two bass drivers as well as a silk-domed tweeter. It can be mounted on a shelf or wall. Moreover, it includes an aperiodic bass loading system.

This consists of a vent that is filled with resistive porous foam that controls the airflow. This has the effect of boosting the bass while maintaining a rich, detailed, and dynamic sound from the dialogue and effects channel.

The DX-3 subwoofer

The DX-3 subwoofer is only 30cm square but delivers deep and powerful bass from a 70-watt built-in amplifier. The 200mm long-throw driver is made of woven polypropylene and integrates superbly with the other speakers.

Also, there is no bass bloating or overhang. Lastly, the subwoofer automatically turns on when there is a signal. It will also turn off after a time of inactivity.

What is surround sound?

Surround sound is a system that has additional audio channels. These were originally intended for movies but some music is also surround sound encoded. The most common configuration is known as 5.1. That is the system used by the Wharfedale DX-3 5.1 Speaker Package. It comprises five speakers and a subwoofer.

There is a front left and right set, a rear pair, and a centre speaker. The .1 refers to the subwoofer. Surround sound systems are driven by a dedicated AV amplifier that has the necessary decoding for the surround sound signal. The amplifier will also have an output for the subwoofer.
